On April 1st, 2008 at around 9:30 P.M. my wonderful mother passed away. As many of you know my mother suffered a stroke about 5 years ago. She had been in failing health since then. About a week and a half ago she had had a fever for multiple days and was becoming less responsive. My father then took the steps to get her to the hospital. She was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection. It was later discovered that the infection had spread to her bloodstream and also had infected a valve in her heart. They began rigorous antibiotic treatments. She responded some to the treatment but after a few days the infection was still in her bloodstream. At this point the doctors also had good reason to believe that she may have spinal meningitis. The infection would take at least six weeks to clear up with IV antibiotics. The following day an MRI was performed on her and found that in the previous week she had had at least two more strokes. The odds of clearing the type of infection she had were 50/50 under the best of circumstances, but her health considered and the possibility of meningitis, combined with the strokes, the odds were much against her. After much discussion between my father and the doctors, the decision was made to let her come home, cease all treatments, and make her comfortable so she could pass at home, in comfort, and surrounded by loved ones. She came home Thursday, March 27th. All of her children were around her for the following weekend. All of us spent time sitting with her and holding her hand. She would almost always respond to Cohen when he would say bye and blow her kisses, she even mustered the strength to blow him one back on Sunday. She passed in peace as we all hoped she would. We try to maintain the attitude that this is a better situation not only for her, but for my loving father as well who has dedicated the last 5 years of his life to her well being. I apologize that this comes quickly to so many who will read this, I just didn't want tell the story too many times and have too many anticipatory phone calls. Please understand, but also feel free to call if you please, we would love to hear from you. I will post all the services when we know them. Thanks, and please remember, she is happier now that she is released, and we are all happy for her, as hard as it may be. She has 3 children to greet her as well as many other relatives. Sleep well mom, we love you.
